Northern Illinois University men’s tennis senior Mikael Vollbach on Wednesday was named the Mid-American Conference Male Scholar-Athlete of the Week as selected by MAC faculty athletics representatives.

Vollbach, a senior from Rothis, Austria, owns a 9-3 record this season while competing primarily at No. 2 singles. Last weekend, Vollbach went undefeated in two singles and one doubles match in NIU wins over Southern and Omaha.

Vollbach won 6-0, 6-2 at No.1 singles against Southern in Saturday’s first dual. He then won two matches against Omaha, 6-2 at No. 1 doubles with Cheng En Tsai and 6-4, 7-6 at No. 2 singles against Omaha.

Vollbach is majoring in business administration and has a 4.0 grade point average. He is the third NIU student-athlete to earn the award, joining football’s Dane Pardridge and Blake West of NIU wrestling.

The MAC Scholar-Athlete of the Week Award is presented to one male and one female student-athlete from a conference school each week, based on both grade point average and their performance in competition during the week.

The Huskies have won eight straight duals and return to action on Friday, March 8 as they open MAC competition at Ball State.
