David Coit (Columbus, N.J./Atlantic Cape CC) of the Northern Illinois University men’s basketball team has been named the Mid-American Conference Player of the Week, announced by the league office on Monday (March 4).

Coit averaged 31.0 points, 4.0 rebounds and 4.0 assists per game as the Huskies split a pair of road contests last week against the top-two teams in the MAC, Akron and Toledo. The Columbus, N.J. native opened the week with 27 points, including 6-of-12 from three-point range, along with five assists as the Huskies topped Toledo, 75-72, on the road, snapping the Rockets’ 15-game conference home win streak.

At Akron on Saturday, Coit netted a career-high 35 points with seven rebounds, three assists and three steals. He also eclipsed the 1,000-career point mark against the Zips, becoming the 33rd player in NIU men’s basketball history to reach the century mark and just the fourth player, along with Jim Bradley, Kenny Battle and Xavier Silas, to do so in two seasons.

Coit is currently ranked 16th in the country in three-point field goals per game (3.15 per game), 21st in free throw percentage (89.1 percent) and 23rd in scoring (20.5 ppg). This is the first MAC Player of the Week honor for Coit in his NIU career.

Coit and the Huskies will conclude their home slate on Tuesday, March 5, when they host Central Michigan. Game time against the Chippewas is slated for 7 p.m. and tickets are available now at NIUHuskies.com/tickets.
