Here’s a pandemic friendly way to celebrate Halloween: Boo Bags. It’s a trend that started popping up in neighborhoods in recent years and is now being pushed by big retailers like CVS, Target, and Meijer. It’s simple: Families fill up bags with Halloween treats and leave them anonymously in front of neighbors’ or friends’ doors. The idea is that the recipient of the bag has been “booed” and must now “boo” someone else with a surprise trick-or-treat bag. CVS is partnering with Hershey to give away one million of these “Boo Bags” this year. Target is planning to give away Boo Bag started kits as well.

The CDC said this type of one-way trick-or-treating — in which individually wrapped goodie bags are lined up for families to grab and go in places that allow people to keep a safe distance from their neighbors, such as the end of a driveway or the edge of a yard — was a “moderate risk” alternative. Just make sure you’re still washing your hands before and after preparing the bags.
