This Week in Huskie Athletics Northern Illinois University will have nine teams in action. NIU men’s basketball will travel to Akron on Tuesday at 6 p.m. before facing EMU on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. in the second half of Cram the Convo. NIU women’s basketball takes a three-game winning streak to Ohio at 6 p.m. on Wednesday. The Huskies face EMU at 1 p.m. on Saturday in the first half of the Cram the Convo doubleheader. NIU wrestling will head to Edwardsville, Ill. to take on SIUE on Saturday. NIU gymnastics travels to Kalamazoo for a dual with WMU at 12 p.m. on Sunday. NIU baseball will head south to Cape Girardeau, Mo. for a four-game series with the Southeast Missouri State Redhawks over the weekend. NIU softball will play five games against Green Bay and Bellarmine in Louisville, Ky. this weekend. NIU men’s tennis takes a trip to Chicago to face DePaul and Belmont on Friday and EKU on Saturday. NIU women’s tennis will face off with South Dakota and Sioux Falls in a Friday doubleheader. NIU Track and Field travels to Terre Haute, Ind. for the John Gartland Invitational starting at 11 a.m. on Saturday.
Men’s Basketball

The NIU men’s basketball team opens the week with a trip to Akron to face the first-place Zips on Tuesday night. Akron comes into the contest with the nation’s longest win streak at 13 games. Quentin Jones leads the MAC in scoring at 16.5 points per game, Jones netted 21 points last time out against Ball State and is averaging 19.2 points per game over the last six contests.
Following Tuesday’s game, the Huskies will return home to host Eastern Michigan on Saturday afternoon as part of a “Cram the Convo” doubleheader.
Women’s Basketball

NIU women’s basketball takes their three-game win streak on the road to Ohio on Wednesday. The Huskies will travel to Athens, Ohio for a matchup with the Bobcats on Wednesday. The Huskies fell 71-55 in their first matchup on Jan. 4. On Saturday the Huskies will take on EMU in the first half of Cram the Convo, NIU already won in Ypsilanti by a score of 78-70 on Wednesday, Jan. 22. NIU currently sits at 12-12 and 5-7 in MAC play.
Last week the Huskies took down Western Michigan 60-51 to extend their win streak to three after defeating Kent State and Appalachian State the previous week. Ohio enters the week 4-19 and 2-10 in MAC play while EMU is 1-22 overall and 0-12 in the MAC.
Wrestling
Saturday, Feb. 22 at SIUE, 6 p.m. – ESPN+ | TrackWrestling
The Northern Illinois University Huskies wrestling program (6-3, 5-1 MAC) are set to conclude the regular season as they travel to in-state foe SIUE on February 22. Action is set to get underway at 6 p.m. at the First Community Arena.
The Huskies were last in action on Feb. 14 as they competed at No. 22 (Intermat) Cal Poly. The Huskies defeated the Mustangs 25-19 as they won six of the bouts, with four featuring bonus points. Markel Baker had the one of the biggest upsets on the evening at 133 pounds, taking down No. 2 Zeth Romney of Cal Poly. Blake West, Jacob Brya, Landen Johnson, Tommy Bennett, and Sean Carroll all collected wins in the Huskies victory.
Gymnastics

The Northern Illinois University gymnastics team will remain on the road for a tri-meet against Western Michigan and UWW on Sunday. Last week the Huskies earned second place in a tri-meet with SEMO and Centenary College. Kiera O’Shea scored a 9.850 to earn a win on the vault for the fifth straight time. The Huskies also got second place finishes from Talia Kraus on bars , Alana Anderson on floor and Aliyah Kelly on bars.

NIU heads to Southeast Missouri State this weekend for a four-game series against the Redhawks. The Huskies took one out three games last week at Nicholls, winning on Sunday 21-2 in eight innings. NIU hit four home runs in the games, including grand slams from Gavin Baldwin and Nolan Sandee. The duo combined for 11 RBI in the victory. The 21 runs were the most by NIU against a Division I opponent since 2016. On the mound, Adam Brouwer and Max Vaisvila combined to throw 11.2 scoreless innings in their starts on Friday and Sunday respectively. SEMO won the Ohio Valley Conference tournament last season and are 1-1 to start the season.

The Northern Illinois University Huskies softball team (3-6) continues early season action on the road, traveling to the Bellarmine Tournament, February 21-23. The Huskies will face Bellarmine and Green Bay at the tournament.
The Huskies are coming off a 1-3 weekend at the Ragin’ Cajuns Invitational. The Huskies posted a 4-0 win over Central Arkansas to start the tournament. Lia Nance led the Huskies with a batting average of .375 starting in all four games over the weekend. Jenna Turner and Katy Ramage led the Huskies with four hits each while Nance, Alana Powell, and Danielle Stewart had three hits each.

The Northern Illinois University men’s tennis team will head to Chicago this weekend after taking down both Marquette and Wisconsin-Whitewater on Sunday, Feb. 16. The Huskies took down Marquette 5-2 and then defeated Wisconsin-Whitewater 7-0 inside the Nelson Tennis Center. Iker Gaztambide Arrastia and Saul Berdullas won all four sets while playing at No. 1 and No. 2 singles in the doubleheader. The Huskies are now 5-4.
Women’s Tennis

NIU takes on South Dakota and Sioux Falls in Sioux Falls on Friday in another doubleheader day for the Huskies. NIU is 8-2 on the dual match season after defeating Valparaiso (4-0) and Lewis (6-1) on Saturday (Feb. 15) at the Nelson Tennis Center in DeKalb.
The NIU doubles team of Reagan Welch and Jenna Horne collected NIU’s fourth MAC women’s tennis weekly honor of the season as they were named the MAC Doubles Team of the Week after posting a pair of wins last Saturday to improve to 8-0 on the dual match season.
In singles, senior Maria Dzemeshkevich won a pair of matches at the No. 1 singles position, including a 7-5, 7-6 (7-3) win over Valpo’s Moira Silva 7-5, 7-6 (3) in a tightly contested match in the morning. Freshman Lucia Yecora remains undefeated in singles (6-0), while junior Nataly Ninova (8-1) and freshman Irmak Budak (6-1) have each dropped just one singles match on the year.
Track and Field

In its last competition before the MAC Indoor Championships, the NIU women’s track and field team heads to Indiana State to compete in the John Gartland Invitational on Saturday. Kamiya Dendy won the high jump this past weekend at the GVSU Big Meet, posting the top mark in the MAC this season as she cleared 1.77 meters. Jasmijn Raes currently holds the third-best mark in the conference in the high jump while Precious Umukoro is ranked third in the MAC in the long jump.
Saturday’s meet is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. CT with field events, with competition on track slated to begin at 11:30 a.m. CT.
