This week in Huskie athletics NIU has six teams in action. Men’s basketball opens up their week on the road with a match up against Central Michigan. They will return home at 3 p.m. on Saturday to take on the EMU Eagles. Women’s basketball will have their lone game of the week at Bowling Green at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 31. Wrestling takes on Buffalo on Saturday. Women’s track and field will compete at the Meyo Classic in South Bend, Ind. Men’s tennis opened the week at 12 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 29 and women’s tennis will host Marquette and Bellarmine on Friday and Saturday.

 

 

Men’s Basketball

The Huskie men’s basketball team begins the week with a road trip to Central Michigan on Tuesday (Jan. 30) before coming home on Saturday to host Eastern Michigan (Feb. 3). NIU has won four of the last five overall in the series against Central Michigan, and three of its last four trips to Mount Pleasant. Saturday’s matchup with Eastern Michigan will be the lone meeting between the two schools this season, NIU swept the season series against the Eagles a season ago.

Women’s Basketball

The Northern Illinois women’s basketball team has just one matchup this week as they will not play this weekend. The Huskies will travel to Bowling Green on Wednesday, Jan. 31 and look to get back on track after dropping their last two games.

 

Last week NIU lost at Toledo before dropping a very close game on Saturday, Jan. 27 in DeKalb. Brooke Stonebraker tied a career high of 20 points in the matchup with Akron. On the season Jayden Marable leads the team in scoring with 11.4 per game while Stonebraker is adding 11.2. Stonebraker also leads the Huskies with 8.2 rebounds.

 

Lexi Fleming leads the Falcons in scoring this season with 15 points per game.

 

 

Wrestling

Saturday, February 3: at Buffalo, 12 p.m. – Live Stats

Heading on their final road trip of the regular season, the Huskies wrestling squad takes their 4-1 MAC and 10-2 overall record to Buffalo (8-10, 3-1 MAC) for a Saturday showdown. The Huskies have three ranked wrestlers in the NCAA Coaches’ Poll, released on January 22.

 

The Huskies defeated Central Michigan on January 27, their first victory over CMU since 2020. The Huskies won the first three matches against CMU and saw the victory sealed by Carter Grewe at 197. Blake West (125) and Jacob Brya (141) remain undefeated in MAC action.

 

 

Women’s Track and Field

 

Friday-Saturday, Feb. 2-3: at Meyo Classic (South Bend, Ind.) –  Live Stats

 

NIU track and field heads to South Bend, Ind., for the second time this season as the Huskies compete in the Meyo Classic on Friday and Saturday (Feb. 2-3) at Notre Dame’s Loftus Sports Center. In December, freshman Arianna Calloway set a school record in the high jump at Notre Dame’s Blue and Gold Invitational as she cleared the bar at 1.80 meters (5-10.75). Henriette Halwas also won the long jump title for the Huskies in their first trip to Notre Dame this season.

 

This past weekend, NIU sent a small group of sprinters to the Olivet Nazarene Invite, where Malia Watkins took top spot in the 60-meter dash, running a time of 7.59 seconds, the sixth-best time in the MAC this season. Competition on Friday will begin at 3 p.m. CT with the long jump and will resume at 9 a.m. CT on Saturday with the 3,000 meters. ACC Network Extra coverage will begin at 1 p.m. CT on Saturday.

 

Women’s Tennis

The NIU women’s tennis team plays a pair of matches at home this weekend, marking the team’s only home appearances in the month of February.  The Huskies (0-2) will play host to Marquette (0-4) Friday afternoon before taking on Bellarmine (2-4) Saturday.  NIU has defeated the Golden Eagles in each of the last two seasons while Bellarmine earned a narrow 4-3 win over NIU in Louisville a year ago.

 

NIU’s No. 1 doubles team of Erika Dimitriev and Nataly Ninova earned the team’s first MAC weekly honor of the season following the Huskies’ season opening weekend. The pair defeated James Madison’s No. 26 ranked team as the Huskies took the doubles point versus the Dukes the last time out.

 

The Marquette match will mark the Huskies’ first since January 21.
