The NIU Track and Field team heads to the Mid-American Conference Outdoor Championships this weekend in Akron, Ohio, while the Huskie Men’s Golf team competes in the NCAA Regionals in Salem, S.C., beginning next Monday, highlighting upcoming events in Huskie Athletics.

Men’s Golf

The NIU men’s golf team heads to The Cliffs at Keowee Falls May 15-17 for the NCAA Men’s Golf Regionals. The Mid-American Conference Champions will make their second appearance in the NCAA Tournament as a team after playing in the 1976 tournament in Albuquerque, N.M. The Huskies had two golfers named to the All-MAC First Team last Friday in senior Tommy Dunsire and sophomore Ben Sluzas.

This is the first time in program history NIU has had two golfers named All-MAC First Team in the same season. The duo is first and second on the team in scoring average respectively. Dunsire has five top-10 finishes this season, with consecutive sixth-place finishes at Iowa and Ohio State. On Oct. 16, Dunsire set a new NIU 18-hole scoring record with an eight-under par 64 in the second round of the Quail Valley Collegiate Invitational. Sluzas was named MAC Golfer of the Week three times this season, the most of any MAC golfer this season. He won two tournaments this year, tying for first place at the season-opening Badger Invitational in September and taking a solo first place at the Robert Kepler Intercollegiate hosted by Ohio State. The Huskie women’s track and field team heads to Akron, Ohio, this week for the MAC Outdoor Championships. The three-day meet begins on Thursday, May 11, at 9 a.m. CT with the heptathlon and continues Friday and Saturday, beginning at 9 a.m. CT each day.

NIU won seven events this past weekend at the Huskie Classic, including the 100 meters where Skylynn Blue ran the fastest time in the conference this season at 11.41 seconds. The Huskies also have the top seed for the MAC Championships in the for the 4×100-meter relay after running 45.22 at the Michael Johnson Invitational in April.

Last season, NIU finished fourth at the MAC Outdoor Championships, Skylynn Blue is the defending champion in the 200-meter dash while the Huskies are also the reigning 4×400-meter relay champions.

NIU closes out the season playing six of its last seven games on the road, starting with this weekend’s series at Bowling Green. The Huskies played three close games this past weekend against Toledo but were swept in the series against the Rockets. Shortstop Andre Demetral had a career-high four RBI in Sunday’s game, with three coming on a bases loaded triple. He leads the MAC with five triples on the year. Sophomore pitcher Mason Ruh threw four scoreless innings last week, posting seven strikeouts while allowing just three hits. Last Wednesday, Ruh struck out the side in the fifth to earn the win in NIU’s 3-2 victory at Milwaukee.

NIU split its four-game series against Bowling Green last year in DeKalb, outscoring the Falcons 40-32. The Huskies host Milwaukee in their final home game of the season on Tuesday, May 16 at 3 p.m. Colin Summerhill hit a go-ahead two-run home run in the Huskies’ win at Milwaukee on May 3 with NIU pitching recording a season-high 13 strikeouts. He hit his team-leading 10th home run of the year this past Sunday against Toledo. NIU closes the season May 18-20 at Eastern Michigan.
