This Week in Huskie Athletics

This Week in Huskie Athletics Northern Illinois University will have seven teams in action. NIU baseball will have mid-week games against Eastern Illinois on Tuesday and UIC on Wednesday before taking on Ball State in Muncie in a weekend series. NIU softball will play host to Green Bay on Wednesday before traveling to New York for a weekend series against Buffalo. NIU women’s tennis will take their six dual win streak to EMU on Friday before hosting Buffalo on Sunday. NIU men’s tennis will close out their season with road duals against Ball State on Thursday and WMU on Saturday.  NIU women’s golf will travel to Columbus, Ohio. to play in the Therese Hessian Invite on Saturday and Sunday. NIU men’s golf will take a trip to Iowa to play in the Hawkeye Invitational starting on Sunday. NIU track and field will send competitors to The Normal Invite hosted by ISU on Friday and Saturday and the ONU Tiger Open in Bourbonnais, Ill on Saturday.

The NIU baseball team closes out its four-game homestand on Tuesday against Eastern Illinois at 2 p.m. The Huskies have won three of their last four games, winning 2-1 at Purdue last Tuesday before taking two out of three games against Ohio over the weekend. Junior Logan Gregorio hit .353 in the series with three doubles, two home runs and 10 RBI. He enters the week second in the MAC with 44 RBI and third with 12 home runs. JP Gauthier is currently on a 12-game hitting streak after going 6-for-11 on the weekend. He is second in the MAC with a .721 slugging percentage with nine doubles and four home runs over his current hitting streak.

NIU split with Eastern Illinois and UIC two weeks ago, winning 15-14 at EIU before a 13-5 loss to UIC. Ball State enters the weekend tied for first in the MAC with Kent State at 10-2. The Cardinals swept Eastern Michigan on the road this past weekend.

The Huskies softball team continues action this week with four games on the slate. The Huskies have won five of their last six games and improved to 7-7 in MAC play with back-to-back shutout wins at Mary M. Bell Field. The Huskies will host the Phoenix of Green Bay on April 9 for a non-conference match-up before heading to the University at Buffalo for a three-game series starting on April 11-12.

 The Huskies have three of the top-10 batters in the MAC with Brianna Pechman, Jenna Turner, and Madison Mathews leading NIU. Turner has recorded hits in five of the last six games for the Huskies and leads the team in hits and runs. Lily Cassell has pitched back-to-back winning games for the Huskies while Madison Carlson recorded her first complete game of the season in the Huskies 4-0 shutout win over Bowling Green.

 The Northern Illinois University women’s tennis team extended its winning streak to six matches and won its 20th match of the season, tying the school record for wins in a season, with a 5-2 victory over Western Michigan Sunday at the Nelson Tennis Center at Chick Evans Field House. With the win, NIU improved its record to 20-4, tying the school record for wins set by the 1984-85 Huskies, who finished the season 20-7.

 NIU currently leads the Mid-American Conference West Division with a 6-1 record and will qualify for the four-team MAC Championship Tournament with one more win.  NIU has not played in the MAC Tournament since the league went to a four-team championship in 2022 and last made the tournament as a number five seed in 2017.

 The Huskies have three regular season matches remaining, beginning Friday at Eastern Michigan. NIU will honor seniors Erika Dimitriev, Maria Dzemeshkevich and Reagan Welch at its final home match of the year on Sunday, April 13 versus Buffalo.

 

Men’s Tennis

NIU men’s tennis will close out the regular season this weekend. The Huskies will travel to Ball State on Thursday before heading to WMU for their season finale on Saturday. The Huskies earned a win last Saturday in their home finale as they took down Toledo 4-3. The Huskies had singles wins from Iker Gaztambide Arrastia, Federico Scotuzzi and Pratyaksh in the dual. NIU also took the doubles point with wins from No. 2 doubles pairing of Berdullas and Klein and the No. 3 pairing of Pratyaksh and Chiao Bo Suo Nan.

Women’s Golf

Saturday, April 12 – Sunday, April 13 at Therese Hessian Invite (Columbus, Ohio)

The Huskies women’s golf team will compete in their final tournament before the MAC Championships as they are set to compete at the Ohio State Therese Hession Invite. The Huskies will compete against a tournament field with five Big Ten school and several MAC schools. Action will take place at the OSU Scarlet Course.

 

Men’s Golf

Sunday, April 13 – Monday, April 14 at Hawkeye Invitational

Fresh off a win in the Kishwaukee Collegiate on Saturday, NIU men’s golf heads to Iowa City to play in the Hawkeye Invitational at Finkbine Golf Course. The Huskies held off Illinois State to win by two strokes over the weekend. Felix Krammer took second place with a 36-hole score of five-under par 135 for his second runner-up finish of the year. Freshman Jack Mulligan had his best finish of the season, taking third place at two-under par. It was NIU’s second tournament win of the season after winning the Badger Invitational on October 1. NIU tied for eighth at last season’s Hawkeye Invitational. Ben Sluzas tied for sixth at five-under par. Sluzas tied for third in this tournament two years ago.

 

Track and Field

Friday, April 11 – Saturday, April 12 at The Normal Invite

NIU track and field will send competitors to two separate events this weekend. NIU will head to The Normal Invite hosted by ISU and the ONU Tiger Open hosted by Olivet Nazarene. Last weekend Jasmin Raes placed third in the Stanford Invitational whole Kamiya Dendy and Arianna Calloway earned eighth.  Emma Vorpages as she earned fifth place on the800 meters which is the team’s season best time with a 2:10:90. The Huskies also posted strong showings at the Elmhurst Chicagoland Championship. Overall the Huskies had seven individual season bests and ne team season best last weekend.
