Women’s Basketball

NIU goes on the road Wednesday to face Western Michigan before hosting Ohio Saturday at the NIU Convocation Center in the first game of a doubleheader with the NIU men’s basketball team. The Huskies rallied from 17 points down in the fourth quarter last Saturday to defeat MAC preseason favorites 67-66 at the Convo. A’Jah Davis and Chelby Koker combined for 24 of the 31 points in the final quarter to key the comeback. The duo finished the game with a combined 43 points. Davis had her eighth double-double of the year with a game-high 22 points and added 11 rebounds. Koker had 21 points and a game-high six assists. It was the 10th time in 13 games this season that the duo of Davis and Koker combined for at least 30 points. NIU swept the season series against both Western Michigan and Ohio last season. Men’s Basketball
Saturday, Jan. 14: vs. Toledo, 3:30 p.m. – Live Stats | Live Audio | ESPN3

The Huskie men’s basketball team makes its first home appearances of 2023 this week as NIU hosts a pair of games against Central Michigan and Toledo. On Tuesday, the Huskies beat CMU behind David Coit‘s 23 points and Zarique Nutter‘s career-best 22. NIU will look to keep its momentum going as it plays host to Toledo on Saturday afternoon as part of a Huskie basketball doubleheader. Saturday is Military Day with free admission available to active-duty military and veterans, it is also Scout Day with group ticket discounts available to Cub and Boy Scouts.

Wrestling
Friday, Jan. 13: at Central Michigan, 6 p.m.

The Huskies (5-3, 2-0 MAC) look to remain undefeated in MACaction this Friday as the team takes on Central Michigan in Mount Pleasant. Last Saturday, NIU split its double dual with Cal Baptist and No. 19 South Dakota State as NIU earned a 20-15 victory over the Lancers, but fell to the Jackrabbits 30-6. Matthew Zuber led the way, going 2-0 with wins over No. 16 Cade King (SDSU) and Peter Acciardi (CBU). Zuber beat King in a high scoring 12-8 upset before dismantling Acciardi 3-1 in overtime.

Women’s Track and Field
Saturday, Jan. 14 at Coughlan/Malloy Cup (Normal, Ill.)

The NIU women’s track and field team returns to action this Saturday as it competes in the Coughlan/Malloy Cup, hosted by Illinois State at Horton Field House. The Huskies are returning to action for the first time since Notre Dame’s Blue and Gold Invitational on Dec. 2. NIU won a pair of events at that meet with Kadeja Campbell earning top honors in the 200-meter dash and Scout Regular finishing first in the 60-meter hurdles. Campbell currently holds the top mark in the MAC this season in the 200 at 24.55 seconds while Regular is fourth in the conference in the hurdles at 8.67 seconds.

Gymnastics
Saturday, Jan 14: at Iowa State, 6:30 p.m. – Live Stats | Live Video (TBA)

After opening the season with a Mid-American Conference win over Bowling Green while scoring a 194.725, the NIU gymnastics team heads west on I-80 for a dual meet versus Iowa State. The meet will be held in Des Moines, Iowa at the Iowa Events Center as part of the Chow’s Winter Classic. Sophomore all-arounder Isabella Sissi and senior bars specialist Natalie Hamp led the way for NIU versus Bowling Green.

Sissi won the all-around with a score of 39.175 while also placing first on vault (9.825) and tying for first on floor exercise (9.850). Hamp earned the highest score in the MAC during the season-opening weekend with a 9.900 on bars to win the event.

Women’s Tennis
Saturday-Monday, Jan. 14-16: NIU Huskie Winter Invitational – Live Scores

The Northern Illinois University women’s tennis team plays host to the Huskie Winter Invitational beginning Saturday in the Nelson Tennis Center at Chick Evans Field House, as four teams will join NIU in a final “tune-up” event prior to the beginning of the dual match schedule next week. NIU head coach Eric Burns believes the tournament will provide a great opportunity for players to return to competitive match play after the semester break.

Players from Iowa, DePaul, Marshall, Montana State and NIU will compete in singles and doubles over the course of the three-day event. Matches will consist of one round of singles each day (Saturday, Sunday, Monday) and two rounds of doubles on Saturday and Sunday. Doubles will consist of separate draws of four while singles will be a flight of eight. Action will begin at 9 a.m. each day.
