Quick Start Leads to Huskies Shutout Win
Recording their second consecutive shutout of the season, the Northern Illinois University Huskies softball team (12-21, 7-7 MAC) posted a 4-0 victory over the Bowling Green State University Falcons (13-24, 5-8 MAC) to close out the weekend at Mary M. Bell Field.
The Huskies recorded seven hits in the game with all seven hits coming from different athletes.
“Maddy sent the tone on the mound, and we came through on the plate today,” said NIU head coach Kathryn Gleason. “We played great defense. It was a total team win.”
Danielle Stewart (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way East) singled to center field for the first hit of the game before Madison Mathews (Yuma, Ariz./Cibola) reached base on a walk. Katy Ramage (Germantown Hills, Ill./Metamora Township) doubled down the left-field line to score three runs for the Huskies. Kacie Quick (Bloomington, Ill./Normal West) mirrored Ramage’s double down the left-field line before being left stranded on the bases.
Madison Carlson (South Beloit, Ill./South Beloit) took on pitching duties for the Huskies, retiring six straight batters before allowing the second hit of the game in the third inning.
Jenna Turner (Marengo, Ill./Marengo) scored the final run of the game for the Huskies on an RBI single by Mathews to left field.
Carlson allowed two hits in the seventh inning as the Huskies defense held the Falcons from scoring for their fifth win in their last six games. Carlson pitched her first complete game of the season and marked four strikeouts.
The Huskies continue action at home with a non-conference game on April 9 as Green Bay visits DeKalb. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m. at Mary M. Bell Field.
