Jim Doherty, owner of OLT Marketing, was moving business offices and stumbled upon a generous donation to the DeKalb County Community Gardens.

Local business owner, Jim Doherty, was moving his business to a new office space on N. First Street and re-discovered more than 1,000 reusable shopping bags that were forgotten in storage. These bags were a discontinued design, which could easily be discarded as old promotional material that just never made it to the light of day.

Instead, Doherty thought about DeKalb County Community Gardens! They work directly to help end food insecurity in and around the county. With them in mind, Doherty reached out to a local philanthropist about redecorating and redesigning them while an anonymous donor covered the reprinting expenses.

The final product is now in the hands of the DeKalb County Community Gardens. They plan to share these rebranded reusable shopping bags with the community through several of their programs like Grow Mobile pop-up food distributions and the Genoa Area Community Food Hub via the pantry and Pay-As-You’re-Able dinners conducted there.

It truly goes to show that one man’s trash, can be a community’s treasure. Please always remember to Reduce, Reuse and Recycle!
