NIU’S YECORA EARNS SECOND MAC PLAYER OF THE WEEK HONOR

Northern Illinois University freshman Lucia Yecora (Seville, Spain) earned her second Mid-American Conference Singles Player of the Week honor of the season – and the school record seventh for the Huskies – Monday after winning both of her MAC singles matches over the weekend.

Yecora improved her season record to 14-1 and her record in MAC matches to a perfect 5-0 with singles wins over Toledo’s Gaby Rondon (6-4, 1-6, 6-0) and Ball State’s Isabelle Tanjuatco (6-3, 6-0). Her wins at No. 3 singles contributed to the Huskies’ victories over the Rockets, 4-3, and the Cardinals, 5-2, as NIU improved to 4-1 in the MAC and 18-4 overall.

“Lu [Yecora] is a match-up problem for a lot of teams, and she’s been showing she can play just about anywhere in the line-up right now,” said NIU head coach Eric Burns following Sunday’s win. “She was great.”

Yecora was previously selected for the MAC weekly singles honor on February 3. She and fellow freshman Irmak Budak, who won the award on January 27 and March 3, have each earned the MAC recognition twice, while senior Maria Dzemeshkevich (March 10) and junior Nataly Ninova (Jan. 20) have each earned the honor once. The doubles team of senior Reagan Welch and junior Jenna Horne picked up the MAC weekly doubles honor on February 17.

NIU’s seven total MAC weekly honors this season (six singles, one doubles) are the most in school history, surpassing the six weekly awards earned by Huskies in 2015 and 2017.

The Huskies take on a pair of MAC opponents this week with just five duals remaining on the 2025 slate as NIU travels to Bowling Green for a Friday (April 4) match against the Falcons before returning home to take on Western Michigan on Sunday, April 6.
