NIU Wins Five Events at Huskie Classic

The Northern Illinois University women’s track and field team earned five event victories as it closed out its outdoor regular season at home with the Huskie Classic on Saturday (May 3) at the NIU Soccer and Track & Field Complex.

Sam Huber (Villingendorf, Germany) took top honors in the 100 meters, Esther Momalife (Lagos, Nigeria) was victorious in the 200 meters, Kamiya Dendy (Anderson, S.C./Pendleton) claimed the high jump title, Ella Bertram (Sainte Geneieve, Mo./Valle Catholic) was first in the javelin and NIU won the 4×100-meter relay.

“It was a great meet today,” said NIU Director of Track and Field Connie Teaberry. “It was awesome being at home with family, friends and administration to get a chance to see our athletes do what they do, and what they work so hard to do to put great times on the board. We got to see a lot of great performances, we had some ladies move up on the MAC list and that is exactly why we host this meet, we get better performances when we have support and people cheering for us. I am really proud of the ladies, and we are going to take this momentum into the MAC Championships.”

Dendy led a top-three sweep for the Huskies in the high jump, clearing a height of 1.71 meters (5-07.25) to take first. Jasmijn Raes (Amsterdam, Netherlands) took second as she cleared 1.66 meters (5-05.25) while Samira Rosenfeld (Schaumburg, Ill./Schaumburg) earned third as she cleared the bar at 1.56 meters (5-01.25).

Huber led a Huskie one-two in the 100-meter dash, finishing just ahead of teammate Stella Oyebode. Huber ran a season-best time of 11.91 seconds, 17th-fastest in the Mid-American Conference this year, to finish just ahead of Oyebode who ran 11.93.

In the 200, Momalife recorded a season-best time of 24.53 seconds, also 17th-best in the conference this season. Talayssia Sanders (Waco, Texas/Waco Connally) was third in the 200 meters, running a season-best time of 25.22.

Bertram recorded a season-best throw in the javelin, posting a mark of 30.96 meters (101-07), which ranks 19th in the conference this spring.

The 4×100-meter relay quartet of Momalife, Oyebode, Huber and Faith Rouse (Milwaukee, Wis./King) also picked up an event victory, finishing with a time of 47.60 seconds.
