NIU Hosts Western Michigan For Education Day Wednesday
The Northern Illinois University women’s basketball team wraps up its current three-game homestand on Wednesday, Feb. 14 with an 11 a.m. game against Western Michigan at the NIU Convocation Center for Education Day.
Tickets for Wednesday’s game are available at NIUHuskies.com or by calling the NIU Athletics Ticket Office at 815-753-PACK (7225). The Convocation Center is offering a $5 Meal Deal on Wednesday of a hot dog, chips and a drink.
Wednesday’s game will be broadcast on ESPN+ as well as locally on WDKB 94-9 FM and the NIU Huskies and Varsity Network Apps.
NIU (11-11, 4-6 MAC) shot a season-high 51.7 percent from the field last Saturday in a 91-84 win over Georgia Southern in the MAC-SBC Challenge. The Huskies also made 10 three-pointers for the first time in 14 games. NIU also outrebounded the top rebounding team in the nation by 10, 50-40. In the last two games, NIU is averaging 83.5 points per game, shooting 48.7 percent from the field and outrebounding the opponent by 14 rebounds per game.
Jayden Marable (Bolingbrook, Ill./Bolingbrook) led all scorers with a career-high 26 points, passing the previous high of 23 set last season against Central Michigan. She also had 10 rebounds for her second double-double of the season and dished out a game-high six assists. It was her sixth game this season with at least 10 points, five rebounds and five assists in a game. Marable leads NIU in scoring at 11.9 points per game.
The Huskies’ three-point shooting has come alive over the last four games. NIU has made 31 threes in that stretch, shooting 40.3 percent from the three-point arc. Sidney McCrea (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Prairie) made four three-pointers against Georgia Southern last Saturday and scored 16 points. She is shooting 55 percent from long range over the last five games. In that same stretch, Tara Stauffacher (Columbus, Wis./Wisconsin) is shooting 42.9 percent from the three-point line.
Western Michigan (9-12, 4-6 MAC) comes to DeKalb after a 78-68 loss to Appalachian State last Saturday. The Broncos shot 52.9 percent from the field but were just 3-for-12 from the three-point line. Graduate guard Kaitlyn Zarycki led all scorers with 22 points, adding four rebounds and three assists. Zarycki leads the MAC in both field goal percentage and free throw percentage and is second in scoring at 18.7 points per game. The Broncos have won four of their last six Mid-American Conference games after starting league play 0-4.
Western Michigan won last season’s meeting 79-70 at University Arena. NIU has won four of the last five games between the two teams at the Convocation Center.
The Huskies go on the road on Saturday, Feb. 18 to take on the Eastern Michigan Eagles. Tip-off is set for 12 p.m. CT.
