NIU Hosts Buffalo For Senior Night Wednesday
The Northern Illinois University women’s basketball team plays its final home game of the 2025-26 season Wednesday night as the Buffalo Bulls come to the NIU Convocation Center. Tip-off is at 6 p.m.
Prior to the game, NIU will honor its five seniors – Teresa Mbemba, Nadechka Laccen, Maria Serracanta, Marta Hermoso and Reagan Barkema – for Senior Night. The ceremony will begin at 5:35 p.m.
Tickets are on sale at NIUHuskies.com/tickets and by calling the NIU Athletics Ticket Office at 815-753-PACK (7225). It is Wine Wednesday at the Convocation Center tomorrow night with nine-ounce cups of white and red wine available for $5.
NIU (6-22, 3-13 MAC) snapped a four-game losing streak last Saturday in a 70-61 win over Eastern Michigan at the Convocation Center. The Huskies led wire to wire and shot 45.3 percent from the field and 40 percent from the three-point arc. Four Huskies scored in double figures led by Nevaeh Wingate’s (Liverpool, N.Y./St. John’s) game-high 21 points. Emilie Sorensen (Waukee, Iowa/Waukee) added 15 points and a team-high six rebounds.
Maria Serracanta (Sabadell, Spain/Mercer) had her first career double-double with 12 points and a career-high 11 assists. The senior guard was 5-for-5 from the field, scoring nine points in the fourth quarter to help the Huskies pull away from the Eagles. Serracanta leads the Mid-American Conference in assist/turnover ratio at 1.93. Over the last eight games Serracanta has 42 assists and a 3.0 assist/turnover ratio. She has also played at least 40 minutes in each of the last four games.
Buffalo (3-25, 1-15 MAC) earned its first conference win of the season on Saturday, defeating Toledo 69-66. The Bulls shot 44.2 percent from the field and were 19-for-23 from the free throw line. Aniya Rowe had a double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds as Gabby McDuffie added 18 points off the bench. Rowe leads Buffalo in scoring at 13.3 points per game. Freshman Meg Lucas is the Bulls’ top rebounded at 9.8 boards per game and is the team’s second-leading scorer at 10.1 points per game.
NIU leads the all-time series against Buffalo 22-12. The Huskies won the first meeting of the season 64-58 at Buffalo on Jan. 7. Sorensen led all scorers with 20 points, going 5-for-6 from the field with four three-pointers. Wingate added 15 points and seven rebounds.
The Huskies close the regular season on Saturday, March 7 at Bowling Green. Tip-off is at 1 p.m. CT.
