NIU Heads To Lexington To Face Indiana State, Eastern Kentucky
The Northern Illinois University women’s basketball team heads to Lexington, Ky. this weekend to face the Indiana State Sycamores on Sunday and the Eastern Kentucky Colonels on Tuesday in the EKU MTE at the Clive M. Beck Center.
Sunday’s game is set for 1 p.m. CT with Tuesday’s game at 5 p.m. Both games will be broadcast on WDKB 94-9 FM, the NIU Huskies app and the TuneIn app. NIU’s game against Eastern Kentucky will also be broadcast on ESPN+.
NIU (3-4) returns to action after wrapping up the fall semester with final exams this week. The Huskies look to bounce back from a 94-55 loss at Missouri on Dec. 7. Redshirt-Sophomore forward Brooke Blumenfeld (Northbrook, Ill./Glenbrook North) led NIU with 14 points off the bench. It was her fourth double-figure scoring effort this season. She has scored at least 10 points as a reserve five times in her career.
Alecia Doyle (Carterville, Ill./SEMO) had 12 points at Missouri, her fifth game in double figure scoring in the last six. The junior guard is eighth in the Mid-American Conference in scoring at 13.4 points per game and fourth in free throw percentage at 84.6 percent. Freshman guard Lexi Carlsen (Sycamore, Ill./Sycamore) scored a season-high 10 points at Missouri. Carlsen was 4-for-8 from the field with two three-pointers. She has made a three-pointer in each game this season.
The Huskies are third in the MAC in field goal percentage at 44.1 percent. NIU has shot over 40 percent from the field in five of the first seven games of the season. On Dec. 7 the Huskies shot 44.4 percent at Missouri, scoring 32 of its 55 points in the paint. NIU has scored at least 30 points in the paint in each of the last four games.
Indiana State enters Sunday’s game 2-6 on the season after a 73-60 loss at Eastern Illinois on Dec. 6. The Panthers ran out to a 23-7 lead in the first quarter and shot 44.6 percent in the game. Junior forward Chloe Williams led the Sycamores with 18 points as Saige Stahl added 14 points and a game-high nine rebounds. Keslyn Secrist leads Indiana State in scoring at 14.4 points per game. Eastern Kentucky enters the week at 7-3 and on a six-game winning streak after a 78-49 win at Hawaii-Hilo on Dec. 11. Senior guard Kaitlyn Costner leads the Colonels in scoring at 13.8 points per game.
