NIU Heads To Eastern Michigan Saturday

The Northern Illinois University women’s basketball team heads to Ypsilanti, Mich. on Saturday to face the Eastern Michigan Eagles. Tip-off is at 12 p.m. CT with the game broadcast on ESPN+ with the radio call on the Varsity Network and NIU Huskies apps.

NIU (11-12, 4-7 MAC) looks to rebound from a 65-47 loss to Western Michigan on Wednesday afternoon at the Convocation Center. The Huskies shot 34 percent from the field but made just 1-of-15 three-point attempts. Senior forward Brooke Stonebraker (Versailles, Ohio/Versailles) led NIU with 14 points and a career-high 16 rebounds. Stonebraker has pulled down double-digit rebounds in each of the last three games and nine times overall this season. She is second in the Mid-American Conference in rebounding with 8.9 rebounds per game.

Jayden Marable (Bolingbrook, Ill./Bolingbrook) had 11 points against the Broncos on Wednesday. In the last four games Marable is averaging 14.0 points per game while shooting 40 percent from the field. She leads the Huskies in scoring with 11.9 points per game as well as assists with 4.2 per game.

The Huskies enter Saturday’s game second in the MAC in three-point field goal percentage defense, holding opponents to 29.1 percent from the arc. NIU has held 12 of its last 15 opponents under 30 percent from the three-point line, including each of the last four. The Huskies held Western Michigan to 27.3 percent on Wednesday. In NIU’s win over Georgia Southern on Feb. 10 the Huskies allowed a season-low 13.6 percent.

Eastern Michigan (6-16, 2-9 MAC) was last in action on Saturday, Feb. 10, defeating South Alabama 81-69 in the MAC-SBC Challenge. The Eagles shot 54 percent from the field in the first quarter to take a 20-7 lead. Tayra Eke led five Eagles in double-figure scoring with 13 points. Olivia Smith had 12 points off the bench. EMU outrebounded South Alabama by 12, 30-18, and shot 55 percent from the field. The Eagles are second in the conference with 3.86 blocks per game and fourth with 8.55 steals per game.

This is the second meeting this season between the Huskies and Eagles. EMU won 67-49 at the Convocation Center on Jan. 3. Smith had a game-high 13 points for the Eagles while Marable had 12 points, five rebounds and four assists.

The Huskies are on the road on Wednesday, Feb. 21 to take on Buffalo at 5 p.m. CT.
