NIU Heads To Bowling Green To Wrap Up January

The Northern Illinois University women’s basketball team goes on the road on Wednesday night to take on the Bowling Green Falcons at Stroh Center. Tip-off is at 6 p.m. CT with the game broadcast on ESPN+ as well as locally on WDKB 94-9 FM, the Varsity Network app and NIU Huskies app.

NIU (9-10, 3-5 MAC) nearly erased a 12-point deficit in the second half last Saturday against Akron but could not get a shot to fall in the final 20 seconds as the Zips hung on for a 61-59 win. Senior forward Brooke Stonebraker (Versailles, Ohio/Versailles) led the charge for the Huskies, scoring 15 consecutive points in the second half including a 9-0 run by herself to get NIU within three in the fourth quarter. She finished the game with 20 points, tying a career-high set on Nov. 24 against Radford. Stonebraker also had a team-high nine rebounds.

Last Saturday’s game was the ninth time this season the Huskies held an opponent to 65 points or less. NIU is allowing 63.1 points per game in Mid-American Conference play so far this season, holding opponents to 27.4 percent from the three-point line. The Huskies lead the MAC in defensive rebounds with 28.2 per game. NIU outrebounded Akron by 12 on Saturday, 47-35. It was the fifth time this season the Huskies outrebounded an opponent by double digits.

Bowling Green is 10-8 on the year and 4-4 in the MAC after an 82-72 loss to Kent State last Saturday. Graduate guard Morgan Sharps led all scorers with a career-high 30 points, making six three-pointers. Amy Velasco added 20 points, six rebounds and seven assists. Velasco leads the Falcons in scoring at 14.1 points per game and is fourth in the MAC with 4.4 assists per game.

The two teams split last season’s two meetings, with each side winning on the road. NIU has won eight of the last 11 meetings dating back to the 2017-18 season.

NIU returns to the Convocation Center on Wednesday, Feb. 7 to take on Ball State at 6 p.m. Prior to that night’s game, there will be both a pregame youth sports clinic for girls ages 6-12 and a panel discussion featuring former NIU athletic director Cary Groth, ESPN SportsCenter host Nicole Briscoe and Dr. Tonya Davis as they talk about female empowerment and their success stories in and out of athletics. Both events are free to attend and take place from 5-5:45 p.m. Log on to NIUHuskies.com to register today. Registered participants will receive free admission to the basketball game.
