Mia Raines Ties for Third at PGA Works Championship

Mia Raines (Galena, Ohio/Olentangy Berlin) of the Northern Illinois University women’s golf team finished in a tie for third in the women’s individual field at the PGA Works Championship at Whistling Straits on Wednesday (May 7).

Raines posted a 54-hole total of 226, 10-over par, in demanding conditions, with two of the three rounds of the tournament played on the famous Straits Course, which has hosted three PGA Championships and the 2021 Ryder Cup.

“Mia was absolutely fantastic all three days,” said NIU golf associate head coach Andrew Frame. “Despite the number of strokes, today was probably the best round of the three. It’s unique to play two golf courses in the same tournament but both courses were extremely difficult in the sense that you are never far away from a double bogey. You didn’t have to do much to get into a precarious position and she did an amazing job staying out of those for the most part.

“She made an early birdie (today), just made one slip up double bogey on five, but other than that, held her ground and finished her last five holes with five awesome pars.”

Raines began the tournament with a 76 on Monday (May 5), playing the Straits Course. On the Irish Course on Tuesday (May 6), the Galena, Ohio native posted an even-par 72, recording five birdies in the round. Raines was one of just five players in the field to finish even-par of better on the Irish Course during the second round.

Dealing with extremely difficult, windy conditions in Wednesday’s final round, Raines carded a six-over 78, which was the second-best round of the day behind a 77 from Delaware’s Hyunji Kim, who claimed women’s individual medalist honors on the first playoff hole over Nebraska’s Miu Takahashi after posting a 54-hole total of 223.

“I think the biggest lesson was in the patience part of it and accepting that pars and bogeys are really good,” said Frame. “This will pay dividends, whether its next year or a couple years after, we are going to get to a place where it will be like that and she will be able to lean on this experience.”

In the men’s individual event, Patrick Bruminhent (Lampang, Thailand/The American School of Bangkok) finished tied for 12th with a 54-hole total of eight-over 224. After opening with a 79 on the Straits Course on Monday, Bruminhent bounced back with a 69 on the Irish Course on Tuesday, which featured four birdies and just one bogey.

Bruminhent closed the tournament with a 76 on the Straits Course on Wednesday. The Lampang, Thailand, native opened his final round with birdies on three of the first four holes. No player broke par in the final round.

“Pat struggled the first day but came back with an awesome round yesterday, he took advantage of a little easier golf course and, today, really took advantage of his early tee time,” said Frame. “He was extremely competitive, I was so happy to see him compete. He didn’t get a chance to play in the MAC Championship, so this was such a positive way for him to finish the season.”

Delaware’s Egor Zubov won the men’s individual title at six-under 210.

The PGA Works Championship was first conducted in the spring of 1987. In 2006, the PGA of America was granted complete ownership and management of the Championship by the National Minority College Golf Scholarship Fund.
