It takes a village to raise a child. Together, our community can help expecting mothers who may not be able to afford what they need.

As an expecting mother myself, this truly touches my heart so much. So often we think about how much it costs for diapers, wipes, baby clothing, baby medicine, formula… but how often do we think of what Mom to Be needs?

As Mom begins her pregnancy journey, she’s met with the cost of prenatal vitamins, which let me tell you first hand are not cheap.  Then, as her beautiful baby belly begins to grow, she can no longer wear the clothes she normally does. Now come maternity clothing, maternity underwear, maternity bras, support socks and support belts and not to mention the shoes! I was SHOCKED on how quickly my feet grew up a size with my first pregnancy and how I couldn’t even wear my flip flops in the dead of winter.

Kishwaukee United Way understands that it isn’t a walk in the park for Mom to Be, and it’s an expensive one at that.

From May 17th through June 30th this year, they are collecting essential items for expectant mothers who may not be able to afford them.

According to Kishwaukee United Way, 36% of Dekalb County residents do have a survivable income. 20% of those families live below the Federal Poverty Level, while 16% of them are considered ALICE. ALICE Stands for asset limited, income constrained, employed. These households are employed but often have to choose between necessities and certainly don’t have enough income to save for emergencies or the future. Without proper income or resources, it can be
difficult for moms to find the things that they need.

If you’d like to help, you can drop off a donation of prenatal vitamins, slippers, maternity clothing or toiletries at one of the drop locations. Donations are being accepted at Kishwaukee United Way office 115 N. First St Dekalb IL, 60115 and Walgreens in Sycamore- 1340 Dekalb Ave Sycamore IL 60178.

If you would like to make a monetary donation towards the donation drive you can text “MOM2BE” to 44-321.
