Kishwaukee Symphony Orchestra Opens 48th Season
The Kishwaukee Symphony Orchestra (KSO) is proud to announce the opening of its 48th season with an extraordinary fall concert, “Symphonic Dreamscapes,” on October 19, 2024, at 7:30 pm, Boutell Memorial Concert Hall, in the Northern Illinois University Music Building. Join Linc Smelser, KSO music director, and guests for a pre-concert talk at 6:30 to enrich your understanding of the evening’s program.
The KSO is honored to have this concert sponsored in part by James and Ann Tucker, whose support helps bring world-class music to the DeKalb community.
What to expect
The concert will feature a dynamic and varied program, with highlights that include a KSO premiere of George Gershwin’s iconic An American in Paris, a symphonic journey through the streets of Paris with its vibrant energy and jazz-inspired themes.
The program will continue with Pyotr Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 1, a stunning early work that showcases the composer’s romantic flair and melodic genius. Also called “Winter Dreams,” this symphony blends the beauty of Russian landscapes with the emotional depth of Tchaikovsky’s musical expression.
As a special treat, the concert will feature renowned oboist William Welter, principal oboist of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, performing Richard Strauss’ Concerto in D Major for Oboe and Small Orchestra. This concerto is considered one of the most challenging and beautiful pieces in the oboe repertoire, promising to be a thrilling highlight of the evening.
Guest soloist
William Welter is the principal oboe of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Appointed to the CSO by Riccardo Muti, Music Director Emeritus for Life, in June 2018, Welter made history as the orchestra’s youngest-ever principal oboist at the age of 24. He made his solo debut with the CSO in March 2022, performing Mozart’s Oboe Concerto in C Major, and returned as a soloist in March 2024 alongside Concertmaster Robert Chen in Bach’s Concerto for Oboe and Violin in C Minor.
In addition to his work with the CSO, Welter is a dedicated chamber musician, performing with groups such as Chicago’s Civitas Ensemble and Rembrandt Chamber Musicians. Prior to his CSO appointment, he performed as a guest with renowned ensembles including the Cleveland Orchestra, Pittsburgh Symphony, New York Philharmonic, and the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra.
Welter is also committed to music education, teaching at DePaul University and Roosevelt University, and leading masterclasses at Oberlin Conservatory, Rice University, and the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. Welter will showcase his artistry with the KSO in Richard Strauss’ Concerto in D Major for Oboe and Small Orchestra.
