A popular trend to remember loved ones may soon become illegal in Illinois.

It has become increasingly popular at memorials to release balloons into the air. Usually, small notes and well wishes will be placed at the end of the strings and the balloons will be released up to heaven bringing the messages to those above.

According to WTVO, a new bill could make it illegal to release a large amount of balloons outside.

Honestly, I personally thought this was already illegal! I do understand the impact the released balloons have on the environment. They are dangerous not only to animals, birds and our habitat, but they also are terrible for our water systems and sewer systems.

The bill is currently in the Illinois House, and if the bill is approved, it will go into effect on January 1, 2022. The fine for releasing balloons would be $500.
