Irmak Budak Earns MAC Singles Player of the Week Honors
Irmak Budak of the Northern Illinois University women’s tennis team has been named the Mid-American Conference Singles Player of the Week, the league announced today.
Budak went 2-0 at No. 1 singles on the weekend, recording wins against opponents from Butler and Minnesota. Budak now has two wins over power four conference opponents this season.
On Friday, Budak began the weekend with a 7-6 (11-9), 6-2 win over Chase Metcalf of Butler. In Budak’s match against Aiva Schmitz of Minnesota on Saturday night, the sophomore fell down in the first set 5-3 and battled back to win 7-6 (7-5) and sealed the win with a 7-5 victory in the second set.
NIU has earned player of the week honors from the MAC in three consecutive weeks, beginning with Isabella Righi and Lucia Yecora named Doubles Team of the Week on Jan. 19 and Theodora Kousiou named Singles Player of the Week on Jan. 26.
Budak earned MAC Singles Player of the Week twice last season. NIU received Player of the Week honors five total times in 2025 (four singles, one doubles) and three times in 2024.
The Huskies have a pair of doubleheaders this weekend, beginning with North Dakota and Northern Iowa on Friday then Milwaukee and Judson at home on Sunday.
