If you don’t already have an I-Pass, you’re gonna have to consider getting one real soon. The Illinois Tollway announced on Thursday that they are permanently doing away with cash tolling.

They first switched to all-electronic tolling in March 2020 to reduce the spread of the coronavirus, but have decided to stick to it moving forward. They say that the initial shift to cash-free toll collection was “successful” and revealed that in 2019 more than 92% of all transactions took place via an I-PASS or E-Z Pass.

To help ensure a smooth transition, the tollway has created the I-PASS Assist Program, which will waive the deposit on transponders and add an initial $20 in tolls to eligible low-income applicants. The program is expected to launch in May.

The tollway will also continue its 14-day grace period, allowing customers to pay unpaid tolls online without additional fees or fines.
