Huskies Win Pair of Events at Bill Bergan Classic
The Northern Illinois University women’s track and field team won the 4×400-meter relay and Arianna Calloway (Blue Springs, Mo./Blue Springs) took top honors in the high jump as the Huskies resumed their indoor season on Friday (Jan. 16) at Iowa State’s Bill Bergan Classic.
Calloway cleared 1.74 meters (5-08.50) on her first attempt to win the high jump with the second-best mark in the conference this season. Jasmijn Raes (Amsterdam, Netherland) was second in the high jump, clearing 1.69 meters (5-06.50) and Samira Rosenfeld (Schaumburg, Ill./Schaumburg) was third at a height of 1.59 meters (5-02.50).
The quartet of Miashlie Jean (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./Northeast), Rosenfeld, Sanaii Vaughn (Gurnee, Ill./Warren) and Natasha Chetty (Victoria, Seychelles/Seychelles Business Studies Academy) won the 4×400-meter relay with a time of 4:03.09.
Elsewhere, Precious Umukoro (Villarreal, Spain) claimed second in the triple jump and third in the long jump. In the triple, Umukoro leaped 11.29 meters (37-00.50) on both her third and fourth attempts of the competition while in the long jump, her best mark of 5.58 meters (18-03.75) came on her sixth, and final, attempt of the day.
In the 60-meter dash, Esther Momalife (Lagos, Nigeria) advanced to the final with the fourth-best time in the preliminaries but earned a third-place finish in the final, running 7.87 seconds. Momalife was also sixth in the 200 meters with a time of 25.67 seconds, a top-15 mark in the MAC this season.
Two Huskies advanced to the final in the 60-meter hurdles as Kyla Motley (Palos Heights, Ill./Shepard) and Jean both reached the final. Motley ran 9.04 seconds in the final to finish fourth while Jean was close behind in 9.10 to claim fifth.
NIU will return to action next Saturday, Jan. 24, when the Huskies compete in the Fighting Illini Challenge in Urbana-Champaign, Ill.
