Huskies Travel To Toledo Wednesday

The Northern Illinois University women’s basketball team goes on the road Wednesday for a matchup against the defending Mid-American Conference champion Toledo Rockets. Tip-off at Savage Arena is at 6 p.m. CT with the game broadcast on ESPN+, WDKB 94-9 and the Varsity Network and NIU Huskies apps.

NIU (9-8, 3-3 MAC) came back from nine points down last Saturday to defeat Central Michigan 70-57 at the NIU Convocation Center. The Huskies shot 57.1 percent from the field in the second half and were 9-for-9 from the free throw line. Redshirt-freshman forward Brooke Blumenfeld (Northbrook, Ill./Glenbrook North) led NIU with 18 points in her first career start, making 9-of-13 shots from the field. Over the last seven games Blumenfeld is averaging 10.9 points and 3.3 rebounds, shooting 52.2 percent from the floor.

Brooke Stonebraker (Versailles, Ohio/Versailles) posted her third double-double in the last four games against Central Michigan. The senior forward had 12 points and a game-high 12 rebounds, scoring eight points in the third quarter to kickstart NIU’s second-half comeback. In MAC games this season Stonebraker is averaging 11.5 points and 9.3 rebounds per game.

The Huskies are third in the MAC in rebounding at 39.29 per game. NIU leads the conference with 27.9 defensive rebounds per game. The Huskies outrebounded Central Michigan by 10 on Saturday 42-32. It was the fourth time this season NIU had a positive double-digit rebound margin.

Toledo (12-4, 5-1 MAC) lost its first conference game on Sunday night in a 65-51 loss at Ball State. Quinesha Lockett led the Rockets with 15 points as Sophia Wiard added nine. Wiard leads Toledo with 16.0 points and 4.9 assists per game. The Rockets lead the MAC in scoring defense, allowing 58.9 points per game. NIU won last year’s meeting against Toledo 67-66 at the Convocation Center. The Huskies rallied from a 17-point second half deficit to snap a four-game losing streak to Toledo.
