HUSKIES RECORD SEASON BESTS AT STANFORD INVITATIONAL
Multiple Huskies recorded season bests as the Northern Illinois University women’s track and field team completed competition at the Stanford Invitational in Palo Alto, California and at the Chicagoland Championships in Elmhurst, Illinois on Saturday. NIU sent a contingent of 11 student-athletes to Stanford while six Huskies were in action at the Chicagoland Meet.
“The travel to compete at Stanford was long and some had to compete the next day after our arrival,” said NIU Director of Track & Field Connie Teaberry. “Their bodies were heavy, but it’s a must for them to feel. This was great preparation for competing at a multiple day competition and preparing their minds and bodies on how to move when feeling lethargic. Performance may not have been what we want but their efforts were. Proud of their mental strength.”
The Huskies’ trio of high jumpers continued to prove why they are one of the strongest groups in the country at that event. Freshman Jasmijn Raes placed third at Stanford, clearing her season best height of 5-8 (1.73 meters), while Kamiya Dendy tied for sixth, jumping 5-4 ¼ with Arianna Calloway matching that height in more attempts to take eighth.
In the invitational triple jump, the Huskies’ Precious Umukoro recorded her season best jump of 39-5 ¾ to place eighth and also had a long jump of 17-8 ¾, good for a 12th place finish.
On the track, NIU runners set season bests in the 200, 400 and 800 meters by Esther Momalife (25.19), Talayssia Sanders (57.27) and Emma Vorpagel (2:10.90) respectively. Momalife was also a part of both the 4 x 100 and 4 x 400 relay teams, which ran 47.08 and 3:50.29, respectively at Stanford, finishing seventh and ninth in those races.
In Elmhurst, Rachel Dietrich’s seventh-place finish in the 800 and Bailey Wilk’s sixth place run in the 5,000 highlighted NIU’s results.
