Huskies Head to Oxford to Meet Miami Tuesday

Back-to-back road games await the Northern Illinois University men’s basketball team this week, beginning on Tuesday night, Feb. 6, when the Huskies travel to Oxford, Ohio, to face Miami. Game time against the RedHawks is scheduled for 6 p.m. CT and will be available on ESPN+ along with 94-9 WDKB in DeKalb, the NIU Huskies app and the Varsity Network app.

NIU is coming off a 76-66 victory over Eastern Michigan this past Saturday (Feb. 3), in DeKalb. Xavier Amos (Chicago, Ill./Whitney Young) scored a game-high 19 points while Will Lovings-Watts (Jeffersonville, Ind./Putnam Science) added 18 points, along with seven rebounds and five steals.

The Huskies erased a four-point halftime deficit against the Eagles with a 15-4 run to start the second half and never trailed the remainder of the contest.

Amos’ 19 points continued a strong stretch as he has averaged 18.8 points per game over the last eight contests, shooting 56.7 percent from the field and 45 percent from three.

NIU went 30-of-35 (85.7 percent) from the free-throw line against Eastern Michigan, including 11-of-12 by Lovings-Watts who is ranked sixth in the Mid-American Conference in free throw percentage in league games, shooting 88.9 percent (16-of-18). David Coit was 4-of-4 from the line against EMU, he currently ranks second in the MAC, and 32nd in the country, in free throw percentage at 88.2 percent (75-of-85).

Coit is also ranked 22nd in the nation in three-point field goals per game (3.05) and 48th in scoring, averaging 19.1 points per contest.

The Huskies currently rank 16th nationally in blocks per game (5.3), 52nd in free throw attempts (22.2 per game) and 93rd in fast break points (11.9 per game).

Miami has an 11-11 overall record, along with a 5-5 mark in conference play, following a 78-69 setback at Ohio last time out (Feb. 3), the RedHawks are 7-3 at home this season. Two players score in double figures for Miami, led by Anderson Mirambeaux at 13.9 points per game, former Huskie Darweshi Hunter adds 12.5 points per contest. Miami leads the MAC and ranks 21st nationally, averaging 29.5 bench points per game.

The last five meetings between NIU and Miami have been decided by a combined 16 points, an average of 3.2 points per contest. Two of those five games have also gone to overtime.

Following Tuesday’s game, NIU will step back out of conference play for the final time this season as the Huskies travel to South Alabama for the second game of the MAC/Sun Belt Challenge on Saturday, Feb. 10, at 2 p.m.
