Four Huskies Named to the All-MAC Teams

Four members of the Northern Illinois University Huskies softball team were named to the All-MAC teams as announced by the conference on May 6.

Danielle Stewart (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way East), Jenna Turner (Marengo, Ill./Marengo), and Madison Mathews (Yuma, Ariz./Cibola) were named to the All-MAC First Team while Lily Cassell (LaGrange, Ohio/Keystone) earned a spot on the All-MAC Second Team.

This is Stewart’s third consecutive year on the All-MAC team while Turner, Mathews, and Cassell earn the honor for the first time.

NIU softball last had four or more honorees in 2019 with five.

Turner, a senior second baseman, leads the Huskies offense with a .391 batting average and 66 hits this season. In conference-only games, Turner is hitting a .451 with 46 hits and seven stolen bases. Turner set the NIU record for most runs scored in a single game, crossing the plate five times in the Huskies 20-2 win over Buffalo on April 12.

Mathews, a senior third baseman, boasts a .371 batting average, 56 hits, and leads the team with 13 doubles, seven home runs, and 37 RBIs. In MAC-only games, Mathews has maintained a batting average of .402, 35 hits, six doubles, and five home runs. Mathews has an OPS of 1.001 to lead NIU in all games.

Mathews and Turner are the only two Huskies to have started in all 48 regular season games for NIU.

A junior utility/pitcher, Stewart has split her time this season between the circle and first base while remaining a mainstay in the NIU batting order. Stewart holds a .338 average, 12 doubles, and three home runs. Stewart is second on the team in doubles and RBIs with 30. In MAC-only games, Stewart sits at a .349 batting average with 29 hits, seven doubles, and two home runs. Stepping into the pitcher’s circle, Stewart has made 20 appearances, 18 starts and has five wins and one shutout on the season. Stewart is holding a 4.32 ERA with 75 total strikeouts. In conference only games, Stewart has started 12 games in the circle with 48 strikeouts and an ERA of 3.98.

A junior pitcher, Cassell has a 4.21 ERA, 1.59 WHIP, and made 24 appearances with 18 starts. Cassell leads the team with nine complete games and two shutouts alongside 64 strikeouts. Making 13 appearances with 10 starts in conference games, Cassell leads the NIU pitchers with an ERA of 3.00 and seven complete games. Both of Cassell’s shutouts come against conference opponents. Cassell recorded 43 strikeouts in conference action and held opponents to a .264 average.
