Four Huskies Named to MVC Men’s Soccer Scholar-Athlete Team

Atahan Arslan (Ismir, Turkiye), Jakub Drazek (Des Plaines, Ill./Elk Grove), Grant Paskus (Indianapolis, Ind./Lawrence North) and Tomasz Slawek (Crystal Lake, Ill./Crystal Lake South) of the Northern Illinois University men’s soccer team were named to the Missouri Valley Conference Men’s Soccer Scholar-Athlete Team, announced by the league office on Tuesday (Nov. 18).

 

Arslan, a sport management major with a 3.67 grade point average, Arslan started 15 matches for the Huskies this season, posting a 1.16 goals against average and a .726 save percentage with four shutouts. He was named to the MVC All-Tournament Team this past weekend.

 

Drazek has a 3.95 GPA majoring in business administration, he appeared in 12 matches, making 10 starts, while missing some time due to injury, and scored NIU’s goal in a 1-1 draw against Drake (Sept. 27). This is the second consecutive year Drazek has been named to the MVC Scholar-Athlete Team.

 

Paskus, who is a statistics major with a 3.73 GPA, appeared in all 17 matches this season, making 15 starts. The sophomore midfielder scored a goal against Kansas City (Sept. 1) and recorded an assist against Bowling Green (Nov. 5) to help the Huskies clinch a share of the conference regular season title.

 

Slawek is majoring in political science and holds a 3.66 GPA. He appeared in 16 matches in his first season at NIU, making 13 starts. The central defender from Crystal Lake, Ill., scored his first career goal in a 2-1 victory over UIC (Oct. 25).

 

To be eligible for the MVC Scholar-Athlete Team, a student-athlete must have a 3.50 cumulative GPA, have played in 75 percent of a team’s matches or started 50 percent, and be at least a sophomore in academic and athletic standing, redshirt freshmen are not eligible.

 

NIU finished the season with an 8-5-4 overall record, winning a share of the Missouri Valley Conference regular season title.
