On Friday, September 20th, First Congregational United Church of Christ, 615 North 1st Street, DeKalb, will hold a taco dinner. “Tacos for Tots” is a fund-raising project for the layette program sponsored by the church. The dinner will be held from 5:00-7:00 p.m. in the church fellowship hall.
For the past 35 years, the women of the church have made layettes for new mothers in the county who cannot afford clothing, diapers, and bedding for their newborn infants. The layettes include 2 blankets, sweater, diapers, pajamas, soap, and other clothing items, many of which have been homemade by women of the church and community. In the past year, the program donated over 250 layettes, but the need has expanded; at this time there are over 75 babies born each month who need these items. Because of this greater need, the church is receiving help from the First United Methodist and First Lutheran churches in DeKalb. All profits will go to purchase items for the layettes, which are then given to the DeKalb County Health Department to be given out to WIC participants.
The menu will include beef and chicken soft tacos, refried beans, Mexican rice, assorted taco toppings, chips, salsa, homemade desserts, and drinks. Many of these wonderful food items have been donated by Rosita’s, Los Rancheros, Inboden’s, and the Lincoln Inn. Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for children under 4.
