94.9 WDKB is excited to recognize our NIU Scholar-Athlete of the Week in conjunction with NIU Athletics! Each week, we will highlight a Student-Athlete who has excelled in their studies, their sport, and/or both. We have two this week! Our NIU Scholar-Athletes this week are:

Markel Baker
Sport: Wrestling
Year: Redshirt-Junior

Achievements: Markel Baker won the 133-pound title at the MAC Wrestling Championship, defeating Will Betancourt of Rider 2-1 on Saturday to earn a berth into the NCAA Championship. Baker is NIU’s first 133-pound MAC champion in 10 years.

Devon Dawson
Sport: Wrestling
Year: Graduate Student

Achievements: Devon Dawson became the first NIU Huskie to win the MAC Wrestling heavyweight championship in almost 50 years on Saturday. Dawson defeated SIUE’s Bryson Buhk 12-8 to earn his spot in the NCAA Championship which starts on March 19. ... See MoreSee Less

Sunil Puri, a developer and philanthropist whose work transformed the Rockford landscape, has died at age 65.
Puri came to Rockford from Bombay, India, in 1979 to attend what is now Rockford University.
He founded First Midwest Group in November 1984, and it grew into one of the premier development firms in the region.
