Happy Earth Day! Have you seen the DeKalb Trash Squirrels scurrying around your neighborhood today?

No, I’m not talking about actual squirrels picking up trash. I’m talking about the fantastic Facebook Group, Trash Squirrels: Cleaning Up DeKalb.

The Public Facebook Group boasts 407 members, and growing, since it’s creation in July of 2020. Their mission? To help keep our community looking better without all of the garbage along the roads and in the parks.

You may have seen members in brightly colored vests walking along Hopkins Park this morning, or you’ll see them late this afternoon at the Northern Illinois University’s Holmes Student Center.

While Earth Day, today, seems to be the perfect time to talk about this incredible group, know that this isn’t a once a year clean up effort. There is a clean up every weekend!

This is definitely a perfect opportunity to get out and enjoy beautiful weather, spend time with your family, get a bit of exercise and help your community all at the same time.

Bravo to the Trash Squirrels on making our community a more beautiful, and cleaner place to live.
