The DeKalb County Treasurer’s Office is pleased to announce the distribution of $612,458.99 in interest earnings, the largest earnings ever from property tax collections. This distribution represents the interest accrued on funds collected through property taxes and held in county accounts before being distributed to local taxing districts.
“Strong relationships with local banking institutions and continued vigilance to keep tax revenue secure while also making quality interest returns are key priorities for our office,” said Becky Springer, DeKalb County Treasurer. “I and my staff work to be stewards of the taxpayer money for as long as it is in our keeping. Finding the balance between security and high interest returns lead to the largest interest Distribution in over twenty years. 100% of this interest goes back to the taxing districts, above their tax levies, enhancing their ability to deliver essential services.”
Key Details of the Distribution:
- Total Interest Earned: $612,458.99 – bringing interest earned during my tenure to $1,360,723.43
- Largest Recipient: DeKalb School District 428, receiving $156,272.45
- Purpose of Interest Distribution: Interest earnings are allocated proportionally to taxing bodies based on their share of property tax collections.
- Total Real Estate Taxes Distributed for the 2023 tax year: $264,960,453.24 – also a record high
Springer continues “The Treasurer’s Office ensures that all funds are invested in compliance with Illinois state laws and county policies to maximize returns while maintaining security and liquidity. The earned interest is a testament to the responsible stewardship of public funds.”
