DeKalb County History Center opens “Food Gathering Around the Table” in collaboration with the Smithsonian

The food on the American table may not define exactly what we are as a nation, but the traditions surrounding our foods speak volumes about who we are. Starting June 1, the DeKalb County History Center, in collaboration with the Smithsonian Institution’s Museum on Main Street program, will host the “Food: Gathering Around the Table” exhibit in Sycamore.

The exhibit kicks off with a grand opening Saturday, June 1 from 12-3 p.m. As you wander through the exhibit space, you will explore how recipes, menus, ceremonies, and etiquette are shaped by our country’s rich Native and immigrant experience, the history of innovations of food preparation technology, and the ever-changing availability of ingredients. The display is a celebration of local identities and shared pride of place through food. The History Center then brings these ideas together to highlight local food traditions through stories and objects.

“As we regularly tell our visitors, all history is local history,” said Michelle Donahoe, DeKalb County History Center executive director. “This exhibit provides a context to share DeKalb County’s history as it compares to the national experience – for example, we will share our cookbook collection; memories from local festivals including Corn Fest, Pumpkin Festival, Sandwich Fair, and more; as well as connect with area restaurants that provide unique cultural food experiences. We are also excited to work with more than 15 community partners including local historical societies, area libraries, and the DeKalb County Community Gardens.”

The History Center is encouraging people to stop by and explore this exhibit that includes a variety of objects and even hands-on activities for children and families. There will also be a touch-screen kiosk featuring interviews with people who have interesting connections to food. Visitors can continue their adventure at area history museums which will have related displays and programming.

This exhibition is created by the DeKalb County History Center in collaboration with the Smithsonian Institution’s Museum on Main Street program, and is generously sponsored by Meta with additional support from Old National Bank and Suter.
